The capseller and the monkeys!
"Daddy! Tell us a story." said Mugdha (Mu) and Mihika (Mi)
"Alright, only one story. And then you go straight to bed. Is that a promise."
My daughters laugh and say "We promise".
And here I get started hoping they stick to that promise....
"SO, once upon a time, in a village, there lived a capseller."
"Daddy! What's a capseller? Have we seen any in Bangalore?"
"Look girls - don't interrupt. Let me finish my story, then ask your questions. So, this capseller went from village to village selling caps.
He had a large basket on his head in which he kept all his caps - colored ones, white ones, cotton ones, woolen ones etc.etc. He would sell the caps through the day and return to his village by evening.
One day, he decided to go to a slightly far away village. To go there he had to pass through a huge forest! So Mu and Mi, what is there in a forest?"
Mu being the older one was quick to respond "Animals! Tigers and lions. Snakes, bears..."
"And? "
Mi mentioned her favorite animal now "Monkeys...hahahah"
"Yes! This forest had a lot of monkeys. No lions or tigers though. But there were bears and deer and a whole lot of birds as well.
The monkey were naughty like Mi here and were very carefully observing this strange sight of a man carrying a huge basket!
After sometime, the capseller got tired of walking through the forest. He was feeling hungry too. He too was carrying a lunch-box, like the ones you carry to school. So, he sat down, kept his basket down near a huge tree, kept his own cap in his pocket, ate his lunch and decided to have a short nap under that tree. There were no people in the forest, so he was not afraid about anything happening to the caps.
He woke up after some time and looked around! The basket was empty. Someone had taken his caps!! He looked left and right , couldn't see anyone. He looked up towards God and what did he see?
he saw hundreds of monkeys on the trees nearby, with caps in their hands!
He tried saying 'Shoo....shoo...bad monkey!' , but the naughty monkeys refused to return the caps.
The sun was shining bright now, so , he pulled out his cap from his pocket and wore it. He looked up at the monkeys, thinking what to do!
He was surprised to see them wearing the caps!
He removed his cap, they removed theirs too! He wore it again, they wore it again too!
So, he got an idea. He removed the cap from his head and threw it to the ground! All the monkeys did the same!"
"Hahah...what foolish monkeys"said Mu.
"Yes. They copied the capseller. But the capseller was smart. He quickly picked up all the caps, filled his basket and ran out of the forest.
he realised that he would have to be more careful in future.
So, that's it! Go to bed quickly else I will not tell you any more stories"
"Good night Daddy!"
